How to Create a Farm Expense Category

Farm expense categories help you organise the expenses recorded on your farm by grouping similar costs together.

Instead of keeping every farm expense in one general list, you can create categories based on the type of expense. For example, you may create categories for feed, medication, transportation, farm maintenance, equipment, labour, utilities, or any other cost that is relevant to your farm.

When recording a farm expense, the expense can be assigned to the appropriate category. This creates a clearer and more structured expense record and makes it easier to understand how money is being spent across different areas of the farm.

Organising expenses into categories also supports better account keeping. Farm owners and managers can more easily find specific expenses, review spending within a particular category, and prepare accurate information when balancing farm accounts.

For example, if you want to know how much was spent on medication or farm maintenance during a particular period, categories make it easier to locate and review those expenses without going through every expense individually.

Before you can assign a farm expense to a category, you must first create the category on your farm.

Step 1: Open Farm Expenses

From your Pigax dashboard main menu.

Click Expenses, and then select Farm Expenses.

Pigax will display the farm expense overview. This page shows the expenses that have been incurred and recorded on your farm.

Note

This does not include fedd expenses.

Step 2: Open the Categories section

On the farm expense overview, click Categories on the top side of the page.

This will open the category overview. Here, you can see all the farm expense categories that have already been created on your farm, together with the date each category was created.

Step 3: Add a new category

Click Add Category.

Pigax will display a form where you can enter the details of the new category.

Enter a clear and descriptive name for the category.

The category name should make it easy to understand the type of expenses that will be grouped under it. Examples include:

  • Medication
  • Farm Maintenance
  • Transportation
  • Equipment
  • Labour
  • Utilities

Avoid using category names that are too broad or unclear. A specific category name will make your expense records easier to review and manage.

Step 5: Save the category

After entering the category name, click Save.

Pigax will create the category and add it to the category overview.

The new category can now be selected when recording or updating a farm expense.

Note

Creating a category does not automatically assign existing farm expenses to it. Expenses must be assigned to the appropriate category when they are recorded or updated.
